Egigi-Xterra

After several weeks of hiking hiatus, we once again meet at CC's driveway to try out the Xterra trail, having learned that two teams of workers and volunteers have been clearing and repairing the badly washed out trail as part of the preparation for the Xterra Race next month. We benefit from that. The sky is still dark. We decide to save the Xterra trail for last, so we march out on Savana Road, with Chops, Bruiser, Jane, Dora, and Capt. Charlie.

The sky finally shows a hint of sunlight when we arrive on the main road toward Egigi Road.

When we arrive at Baby's Nursery, we are dismayed to find it abandoned. The fence has collapsed, and all the plants are gone. We call out to her, with no answer. We wonder what has happened and leave the site in low spirit.

But Wait! Further down the road, we see Baby. She is in good health and spirit. She has inherited a bigger lot from her uncle, and has set up an even better nursery. Here she is happily showing us her pride and joy. She brings out a bunch of tangerines for us, and we smack our lips and stuff our pockets with these sweet fruit. We are so glad she is doing better and promise her we will tell Handy and Cutie so they can come and load up on new plants!

Just after we pass Baby's new nursery, we notice this interesting site. We recall that the last time we were here Handy had attempted to reach this cave but was stopped by the thick boonie growth. Now it is cleared and we can see it plainly from the road. After a bit of hesitation, we decide to go in for a closer look.

A combination of Catholic and Japanese memorial are placed outside and inside the cave.

Here we are looking at a Japanese plaque in this cave.

Several objects are hanging from the roof of the cave, including this group of rocks, and the lantern.

Coming out of Egigi, we are on Talofofo Road. We see quite a few bikers, in different groups. This one is led by Lewis. Chops and Dora surge ahead toward KingFisher.

As we pass by the entrance to Old Man by the Sea, we notice this shoe marking the trail. So who is walking around with only one shoe?

Here is another cave uncovered. We hear that there is a group of people going around island to open up hereto forth undiscovered caves. That should make our hiking more interesting.

We make a stop at the entrance of KingFisher and feast on all the snacks we have brought. After losing one of the rogue tangerines that rolls down the hill, we quickly eat up the rest. When we arrive at the Camacho farm, we ooh and aah at their star fruit. The nice lady at the farm tells us we can pick any of the fruit we want. We pick off a few and leave these still green ones on the tree.

The Xterra Trail is cleared and very nice. When we reach the caved-in section, we see that the good people have indeed opened up a detour to bypass the dangerous section. Bruiser and Jane try out the new trail.

Bruiser pointing out the old section which is now covered up with grass, and blocked off with branches.

Safely back at CC's driveway, we are happy to have completed this hike of roughly 6.5 - 7 miles. Chops and Jane showing off their star fruit. We are Dora, CC, Chops, Bruiser, and Jane.
